Experiences and adventures with the humble blue mussel in a starring role. Our business is based around the historic health spa resort of Lyckorna on Sweden’s beautiful West Coast, with a restaurant and bar overlooking the sea and boat trips where we investigate the bountiful underwater gardens in the surrounding fjords.

Our idea of a West Swedish gourmet experience. Enjoy only the freshest blue mussels, with classic accompaniments, in an environment that’s relaxed and intimate yet rich with tradition. The Mussel Bar also sells local produce, mussels and accessories.

We keep it simple and let the mussels speak for themselves in all our dishes. The bread is baked here and the aioli homemade. As far as possible we buy raw ingredients locally, based on what the season is offering. Our mussels always come from Scanfjord’s farms – maybe you’ve helped to harvest them yourself!

The mussels are prepared using our own house recipe, which is more or less as follows: We sauté onions and garlic in rapeseed oil with finely chopped vegetables. When the contents begin to sweat we add finely chopped parsley and chilli, letting them cook for a minute or two before we add white wine, boiling to reduce a little before finally adding the mussels.

That all cooks together with the lid on until the mussels have opened and the meat inside has a lovely texture and loads of flavour.

When that’s done we’re ready to serve our dark blue gold with one or several of our classic accompaniments and delicious sauces. You’ll always find our signature dishes – moules frites, moules marinière and moules Roquefort – on the menu.

Our bar serves a great variety of well chosen drinks, whether we’re talking about alcohol free, locally produced apple juice or water from our own well. The beer and wine list is compact but carefully selected. The bar also offers a limited choice of liqueurs and spirits.

Mussel expeditions from Klocktornet (The Clock Tower), next to the Mussel Bar in Lyckorna, Ljungskile, have fixed departure times from April to October.

Voyage out into the fjord to the mile wide mussel farms where you’ll harvest live blue mussels, which we’ll then prepare and enjoy together back at Klocktornet.

MS Märta is a 16 ton steel hulled boat, 11 metres long and 3.6 metres deep, capable of carrying up to 12 passengers in addition to the crew. We always take something to drink and eat with us, and there’s a toilet on board. Life jackets and weather proof clothing are also kept on board and if the weather is really bad there’s room in the cockpit for all. Please bring comfortable footwear – preferably boots, and a warm hat and gloves or mittens with you.

Safety is paramount and the skipper will make a decision on a case by case basis, putting guests’ welfare first, if the trip will go ahead. The fjords our mussels grow in are quite sheltered so the weather is generally not an issue, as the waves aren’t usually big enough to cause a problem. The tour will probably be cancelled if the weather is stormy or there’s a thunderstorm. Naturally the boat carries all the necessary safety equipment and a thorough inspection is made before every departure. The trip lasts about 4-5 hours. The journey can be shorter depending on content, and location of mussel farm, and can be made longer if you wish to add other activities to the event.

A substantial fisherman’s sandwich, coffee, tea water or soft drink is normally included in the price. This can of course be added to depending on the time and the group’s own requirements.

The mussels are usually prepared when we have landed back at Lyckorna, on the large cooking area in the Mussel Bar. Alternatively, depending on the size of the group and where we have set out from, we can go ashore on a beach to make food, or cook the mussels on board the boat.

If you have any allergies or want to eat something other than mussels we can sort an alternative if you let us know in advance.

There’s a guest harbour on the doorstep which is managed by Lyckorna Brygga.

Parking can be difficult sometimes, especially when the weather brings out the crowds. However there are several places nearby where you can park, such as by Ljungs church on Kyrkvägen and the Bath Spa (Kallbadhuset)/Sailing Club on Strandvägen.

You’re welcome to drive up to drop guests and luggage off at the Mussel Bar first and then go and find a space to park.

You can easily get to Ljungskile by public transport whether you’re arriving from the north, east or the south. However in certain seasons and times of the day taxis can be in short supply. You can walk to the Mussel Bar from Ljungskile Station in around 20 minutes at average walking speed.

There’s a wide range of accommodation choices in the area, of varying price classes and types. Get in touch and we’ll happily help with our accommodation top tips.

Kungsparken, the local swimming municipal swimming area, is a few minutes’ walk from the Mussel Bar.

At the foot of the Mussel Bar you’ll find the Lyckorna Steam Boats jetty, and during the summer season you’ll be able to travel round the archipelago on these lovely old boats, which also offer guided tours on certain days.
